In the whole world, you can only see and take the mountain gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. In Rwanda, these primates can be seen in the Volcanoes National Park, Parc Nationale Des Volcans, as of 2016, there are 7 mountain gorilla groups habituated making it 56 gorilla permits for visitors to Rwanda available every single day. 8 people per group can trek these endangered apes.
Susa group is the best to track with 41 gorillas! With a Rwanda gorilla permit costing US $ 1500 per person per trek, part of your contribution goes to conserving these mountain gorillas and the community but still areas like Uganda & Congo where gorilla permits cost $ 600 USD and $ 400 USD and $ 450 USD and $ 200 USD low season respectively goes to the conservation of mountain gorillas and community.
You have to wake up early morning, meaning that you must find accommodation closer to the park entrance. Your African gorilla guide will be briefing you at 7 am about safety precautions as well as the etiquette. There are over 80 gorilla tracking guides provided by the Rwanda Development Board, well trained and speaking English and French.
Together with other members of the group, you proceed to the forest and start the hike which may be tiring depending on your physical strength. Remember they are called mountain gorillas so an element of hiking is a must. The adventure takes anything from 30 minutes to a couple of hours. The English-speaking forest guides are amazingly good, and will lead you to the specific ‘habituated’ mountain gorilla group, which certainly will be acquitted to human presence.
Nyungwe Forest is a home to habituated chimpanzees and 12 other primates’ species (including over 400-strong troop of habituated Ruwenzori Black & White Colobus Monkey) it’s also a birder’s paradise with over 300 species, including 16 endemics, and is home to 75 different species of mammal. Nyungwe Forest National Park is located in the south west of Rwanda Covering over 1000 square kilometres, Nyungwe is surely one of the world’s most beautiful and pristine mountain rain forests and it’s believed to be one of Africa’s oldest forests.
Nyungwe is filled with nature and wildlife experiences for you to emerge yourself in hiking and tracking the famous chimpanzees, experiencing the canopy walk, witnessing beautiful birds, relaxing by waterfalls are just a glimpse of activities that Nyungwe Forest has to offer.
Tourists and other Visitors who visit Nyungwe National Park can now experience the rain forest from this new perspective Canopy Walkway, the East Africa’s only Canopy Walkway provides a stunning view of the park’s amazing wildlife and nature. The Walkway is accessible as part of a specialized guided tour along the Igishigishigi, hiking the Imbaraga or Umuyove trails.
The Canopy Walkway Tour costs $60 per person, all participants must be at least six years of age and children must be accompanied by adults. It is not surprising that chimpanzee tracking is a popular activity in Nyungwe (especially when the park’s trees are in full bloom during the summer) as well-trained guides often lead visitors through the park’s forests and while actually viewing chimpanzees is not guaranteed, you’ll enjoy learning about these creatures and their natural habitats from your guides.
