Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the south west positioned with in the rolling highlands of Kigezi features a minimum population of 400 mountain gorillas and a count of 10 gorilla groups have been habituated for human encounter. These gorilla families are spread in four gorilla trekking regions of Bwindi as follows; Buhoma in the north features three gorilla groups namely Mubare, Habinyanja and Rushegura, Ruhija in the east features three gorilla groups of Oruzogo, Bitukura and Kyagurilo, Rushaga in the south features five gorilla families of Mishaya, Nshongi, Bweza, Kahungye and Busingye and eventually Nkuringo in the south west with one gorilla family called Nkuringo.

Besides Bwindi, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park to the south western tip of Uganda sheltering the three of the eight Virunga Volcanoes is part of the Virunga massif that supports 480 mountain gorillas. One gorilla family called Nyakagyezi is habituated in Mgahinga and can be encountered from both Ntebeko Visitor Centre and the Muhabura base.
